Baltimore, MD – Five new Fellows of ABET have been named for 2009: Richard O. Anderson, Lawrence G. Jones, Arthur L. Price, Kay G. Schulze, and Mary Leigh Wolfe. These individuals will be inducted during the 2009 ABET Annual Awards Banquet in San Antonio, Texas, October 29.
ABET is the recognized accrediting body for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology. The Fellow of ABET Award is presented annually to recognize as many as five individuals who have given sustained quality service to the ABET-related professions, in general, and to education within the ABET disciplines, in particular, through the activities of ABET.
Each Fellow’s awards citation and recent service with ABET appears below:
Richard O. Anderson, P.E., a Principal Engineer with Somat Engineering, Inc., Detroit, Michigan, will be recognized “for leadership in the development and implementation of outcomes-based accreditation for continuous quality improvement of educational programs across all commissions of ABET, for commitment to diversity, and for promotion of international accreditation.” Most recently, Anderson was ABET’s President for 2004-2005. Prior to that time, he served on the ABET Board of Directors and on the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission representing the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
Lawrence G. Jones, Ph.D., Senior Member of the Technical Staff at the Software Engineering Institute of Carnegie Mellon University, will be recognized “for leadership in ABET’s Accreditation Council and Computing Accreditation Commission, resulting in harmonization of accreditation criteria, improved training of evaluators, and overall greater cooperation among ABET’s commissions.” Jones chaired the ABET Accreditation Council from August 2007 through July 2009 and currently sits on the ABET Board of Directors as a Representative Director from CSAB, Inc.
Arthur L. Price, Ph.D., who is retired from the technical staff at AT&T / Lucent Bell Laboratories / Avaya Labs and from his position as a visiting professor at the Metropolitan State College of Denver, will be recognized “for dedication and exemplary service to the computing and information systems community, as well as commitment to ABET, which has significantly improved the training and accreditation processes and enhanced the working relationships between ABET and CSAB.” Before joining the ABET headquarters staff as Adjunct Accreditation Director for Computing this summer, Price served on the ABET Board of Directors as a Representative Director from CSAB, Inc., and as a member of the ABET Computing Accreditation Commission.
Kay G. Schulze, Ph.D., who recently retired from a faculty position in the Computer Science Department at the United States Naval Academy, will be recognized “for outstanding leadership in transitioning the Computing Accreditation Commission to outcomes based accreditation, in promoting and developing accreditation of information technology programs, improving the efficiency of the accreditation processes, and fostering a collegial working environment with the other commissions.” Schulze was chair of the ABET Computing Accreditation Commission for the 2005-2006 cycle and currently serves as an Alternate Director from CSAB, Inc., to the ABET Board of Directors.
Mary Leigh Wolfe, Ph.D., Professor and Assistant Department Head for Teaching in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech, will be recognized “for exemplary leadership of the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission and service to ABET through contributions for improving volunteer training and criteria refinement, and for providing a model of excellence for commission editors.” Wolfe served as Chair of the Engineering Accreditation Commission for the 2007-2008 accreditation cycle. Prior to that, she represented the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) on that same commission.
The ABET Annual Awards Banquet is held as part of each year’s ABET Annual Meeting. The 2009 Annual Meeting — Collaborate, Innovate and Transform! Tackling Today’s Educational and Professional Challenges — will take place in San Antonio, October 29-30.
