ABET Regrets the Loss of Capt. Kent Hamlin

Recently, ABET learned of the death of an esteemed volunteer, Capt. Kent W. Hamlin, P.E., who lost his battle with cancer on November 2.

Allen I. Ormsbee, Ph.D. Accepts the Linton E. Grinter Distinguished Service Award

Ormsbee was recognized for his dedication to the principles of ABET that went above and beyond normal call of duty and for shepherding the fiscal policies and procedures of ABET as Treasurer and Member of the Finance Committee.

2010 Fellows of ABET Named

Three new Fellows of ABET have been named for 2010: Daniel J. Bradley, Ph.D., Robert L. Cannon, Ph.D., and William E. Kelly, Ph.D., P.E. These individuals were inducted during the 2010 ABET Annual Awards Banquet in Baltimore MD, October 28.

ABET Regrets the Loss of Dr. Elizabeth Judson

ABET regrets to announce the loss of one of our esteemed volunteers, Dr. Elizabeth (Beth) Judson, who died in an airplane crash yesterday morning, October 26, 2010. Dr. Judson has been associated with ABET for more than 10 years, and was serving on the Executive Committee of the Engineering Accreditation Commission.

The National Academy of Engineering's Center for the Advancement of Scholarship in Engineering Education (CASEE) has once again designated ABET's Institute for the Development of Excellence in Assessment Leadership (IDEAL) as a CASEE Dissemination Channel.

Robert Fredell, Ph.D., to Direct ABET’s Accreditation Activities

Robert S. Fredell, Ph.D., will become ABET's Managing Director for Accreditation, effective August 1, 2010. In this position, Dr. Fredell will lead ABET’s accreditation activities, collaborating closely with its senior leadership to architect future accreditation strategies and policies on a global scale.

ABET Board Elects 2010-2011 Leadership at March 27 Meeting

The ABET Board of Directors has elected Larry A. Kaye, Ph.D., P.E., as its 2010-2011 President-Elect at its spring meeting, held in Baltimore on Saturday, March 27. Kaye will be installed during the 2010 ABET Annual Meeting in Baltimore, MD, in October.

Optics and Photonics Society Joins ABET

SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, is the latest body to become a member of ABET, the accreditation organization dedicated to assuring quality in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology education.

Accredited Programs at HBCUs

Howard University was the first historically black college or university to have ABET-accredited programs. ABET's predecessor, the Engineers' Council for Professional Development, accredited three engineering programs there in 1937.
