The following accreditation criteria and policy changes were approved by the ABET Board of Directors at their October 27, 2012 meeting.

ABET Seeks Your Comments on Proposed Changes Below

For all proposed changes detailed below, ABET is seeking your input, due by June 15, 2013.

Accreditation Policy and Procedure Manual (APPM)

Section II.A.1. – This section explicitly states that an institution may not use the same program name to identify both an accredited and a non-accredited program.

Section II.E.3.d. – This section includes the revised scope for engineering technology program accreditation to include revised program naming requirements.

Section II.E.6. – This section details the new eligibility requirement for programs seeking initial accreditation review.

Section II.E.7. – This section provides information on diploma and accreditation mills.

Section II.I. – This section clarifies requirements and process for the termination of a program’s accreditation.

Proposed Changes – This section details proposed policy changes requiring a program to post student performance data. It also details new requirements in posting the accredited status of a program.  ABET is seeking comment until June 15, 2013, on this proposed change.

Applied Science Criteria

Associate level program criteria for surveying, geomatics, and similarly named programs are in effect for the 2013-14 review cycle going forward.

Industrial Management Program Criteria have been sunset effective with the 2013-14 review cycle.

Computing Criteria

A revision to Criterion 3 – Student Outcomes concerning outcome (a) is offered on first reading for review and comment.  See the Proposed Changes Section of the CAC Criteria.

Engineering Criteria

A revision to Criterion 6 – Faculty for clarification purposes is offered on first reading for review and comment.  See the Proposed Changes Section of the EAC Criteria.

Optical/Photonic Engineering Program Criteria are offered on first reading for review and comment.  See the Proposed Changes Section of the EAC Criteria.

Revisions to the following Program Criteria are offered on first reading for review and comment.

  • Electrical/Computer Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

Engineering Technology Criteria

The change to Criterion 5 – Curriculum concerning the appropriate level of mathematics for baccalaureate engineering technology programs is in effect for the 2013-14 review cycle.
Fire Protection Engineering Technology Program Criteria are offered on first reading for review and comment.  See the Proposed Changes Section of the ETAC Criteria.

Revisions to the following Program Criteria are offered on first reading for review and comment.
