ABET Board Elects 2010-2011 Leadership at March 27 Meeting

Baltimore, MD – The ABET Board of Directors has elected Larry A. Kaye, Ph.D., P.E., as its 2010-2011 President-Elect at its spring meeting, held in Baltimore on Saturday, March 27. Kaye will be installed during the 2010 ABET Annual Meeting in Baltimore, MD, in October.

Larry Kaye has been involved with engineering accreditation for more than 25 years. He became an ABET program evaluator from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) in 1982 and has since been on 19 ABET accreditation visits as either a program evaluator or team chair. Larry was a member of ABET’s Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) from 1994 to 2004 and was the commission’s chair for the 2002-2003 accreditation cycle.

In 2004, Larry was appointed to the ABET Board of Directors representing AIChE and will continue to serve a representative director until his induction as ABET President-Elect this fall. He also serves on the Executive, Finance, and Membership Committees of the ABET Board. Previously, Larry chaired the Steering Team for the Partnership to Advance Volunteer Excellence (PAVE), an 2006- 2008 initiative that addressed and implemented improvements related to ABET program evaluator recruitment, selection, training, and performance appraisal. Larry was named an ABET fellow in 2005.

In September 2007, Larry retired from ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company in Fairfax, Virginia, after 34 years of experience in a variety of technical, managerial, staff, and executive positions. Prior to joining Exxon, Larry worked for Pratt and Whitney and United Nuclear Corporation. Larry received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Yale University in 1972 and his B.S. in chemical engineering from New York University in 1968. He is a fellow of AIChE and a registered professional engineer in New Jersey.

In addition to Larry Kaye, who will serve as President-Elect, the following individuals have been elected to serve on the ABET Board of Directors during the 2010-2011 term:

  • Phillip E. Borrowman, P.E., S.E., will become 2010-2011 ABET President. At present, Borrowman is ABET’s President- Elect. Previously, he served as an American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) representative on the Board of Directors. He was named a Fellow of ABET in 2007. Currently, Borrowman is a Senior Vice President at Hanson Professional Services, Inc., in Kansas City, MO.
  • Ronald L. Hinn, Jr., has been re-elected to a second one-year term as ABET Secretary. Prior to assuming this position, he served a three-year term as the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) representative on the ABET Board of Directors. Hinn lives in Houston and currently serves as a Managing Director within PetroSkills, an upstream oil and gas technical training firm.
  • Bassem F. Armaly, Ph.D., has been elected ABET Treasurer. Currently, Armaly is in his second year of chairing the ABET Finance Committee, a position he has held since fall of 2008, and in his last year of his second three-year term representing ASME (formerly the American Society of Mechanical Engineers) on the ABET Board of Directors. Armaly is a Curators’ Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, MO.
  • 2009-2010 ABET President David K. Holger, Ph.D., will become ABET Past President. Previously, Holger served as an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) representative on the ABET Board of Directors. He was named a Fellow of ABET in 2006. Currently, Holger is the Associate Provost for Academic Programs and Dean of the Graduate College at Iowa State University in Ames, IA.

The 2010-2011 leadership will be installed during the fall 2010 ABET Board of Directors meeting, which will be held in Baltimore, MD, on Saturday, October 30, 2010.
