Among the most respected accreditation organizations in the world, ABET has been the global leader in technical program accreditation for more than 75 years.
Each year, approximately 85,000 students graduate from more than 3,100 ABET-accredited programs at over 670 colleges and universities in 24 countries.
ABET is a federation of 31 professional and technical societies that contribute funds and volunteers to set policy, develop strategy, and conduct ABET accreditation activities worldwide on behalf of their professions. There are currently more than 2,000 volunteers on ABET's roster.
ABET also provides leadership internationally through workshops, consultancies, memoranda of understanding, and mutual recognition agreements, such as the Washington Accord, the Seoul Accord, and the Sydney Accord.
ABET is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
Board of Directors
The primary responsibilities of the Board of Directors are to set policy, approve accreditation criteria, and strategically guide the organization. The representatives on the ABET Board of Directors are chosen by and from ABET's member societies and also include five public directors. ABET Board of Directors serve on a volunteer basis.
Program Evaluators
Program evaluators visit and review programs seeking accreditation. Program evaluators, who come from industry, academe, and government organizations, apply to their respective societies for selection to serve. ABET program evaluators serve on a volunteer basis.
Commissions
Four ABET commissions implement accreditation processes and make accreditation decisions for their respective disciplines:
Commissioners are chosen by and from ABET's member societies, and there is also one public commissioner for each commission. Nearly all commissioners are experienced program evaluators who now serve as team chairs and lead review teams consisting of program evaluators on campus visits. ABET commissioners serve on a volunteer basis.
Professional Staff
Led by Executive Director, Dr. Michael K.J. Milligan, ABET's professional staff provides administrative, organizational, communications, event production, marketing, training, and research support to the ABET community.
