Dr. Linton E. Grinter
In 1972, Dr. Linton E. Grinter received the first Distinguished Service Award from ABET's predecessor, the Engineer's Council for Professional Development (ECPD). The award – ABET’s highest – was later renamed in his honor.
Among his many achievements, Dr. Grinter chaired the Committee on Evaluation of Engineering Education that produced the groundbreaking 1955 Grinter Report, which recommended fundamental improvements in engineering curricula, including strengthening work in the basic sciences; the inclusion of engineering analysis and design to stimulate creative thinking; and the integration of coursework in the humanities and social sciences.
His professional career spanned more than 50 years and included positions at Texas A&M University, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the University of Florida. From 1963-1967, Dr. Grinter served as Vice President and President of the organization that later became ABET.
Recipients of the Linton E. Grinter Distinguished Service Award are ABET volunteers who follow in Grinter's footsteps, making outstanding contributions to the technical disciplines through their work in ABET-related activities.
