ABET Vision

ABET will provide world leadership in assuring quality and in stimulating innovation in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology education.

ABET Mission

ABET serves the public through the promotion and advancement of education in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology. ABET will:

  • Accredit educational programs.
  • Promote quality and innovation in education.
  • Consult and assist in the development and advancement of education worldwide in a financially self-sustaining manner.
  • Communicate with our constituencies and the public regarding activities and accomplishments.
  • Anticipate and prepare for the changing environment and the future needs of constituencies.
  • Manage the operations and resources to be effective and fiscally responsible.

The ABET Strategic Plan

Accredit educational programs.

  • Provide, operate and maintain an independent and objective accreditation system of the highest quality and effectiveness.

  • Provide timely dissemination of accreditation results and respond to information requests.
  • Adapt to emerging technologies, changing disciplines, and blurring among boundaries.
  • Adapt to evolving educational paradigms (method of delivery, type of institution).

Promote quality and innovation in education.

  • Provide appropriate rewards and recognition programs.
  • Facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences within ABET and across constituencies.
  • Increase the rate of participation of relevant educational programs throughout ABET.
Consult and assist as requested in the development and advancement of education worldwide in a financially self-sustaining manner.
  • Assist educational institutions in the U.S. and internationally.
  • Promote international mobility of technical professionals through activities such as the development of mutual recognition of accreditation systems, the determination of substantial equivalency of programs, and the evaluation of educational credentials.
  • Assist countries or regions with development of educational quality assurance systems.

Communicate with our constituencies and the public regarding activities and accomplishments.

  • Publish readily accessible, appropriate reports and statistics.
  • Participate in forums of stakeholders and constituency groups.
  • Promote the value of accreditation.

Anticipate and prepare for the changing environment and the future needs of constituencies.

  • Frequently scan the environment and seek input from stakeholders and other constituencies for emerging issues.
  • Engage member societies and other constituencies in activities to address strategic issues.
  • Embed a culture of quality improvement in all ABET operations.
  • Increase participation in ABET activities by women, underrepresented minorities, and practitioners employed by industry and government.

Manage the operations and resources to be effective and fiscally responsible.

  • Sustain an adequate cadre of volunteers and staff.
  • Utilize volunteers and staff in the most effective manner.
  • Provide effective, mutually supportive relationships with ABET member societies.
