Communications Manager

Summary: Manages the communications, promotions, and marketing function of the Professional Services Division in support of the ABET Strategic Plan. Responsible for development and maintenance of ABET's public communications.  Identifies, organizes, and segments markets. Manages ABET's communications decisions to achieve maximum impact. Identifies, targets, and cultivates promotional opportunities, emerging markets, and growth potential to enhance and sustain ABET's leadership in quality assurance of applied science, computing, engineering, and technology. Identifies and cultivates new markets for ABET activities to maximize ABET's outreach and enhance its leadership role in global higher education. Provides staff support for special task groups and committees of the ABET Board of Directors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

  • Develops and maintains ABET public communications.

  • Identifies, develops, and implements marketing strategies to enhance the growth of participation in ABET activities.

  • Researches, analyzes, and targets constituencies to effectively support the communications goals of the ABET Strategic Plan.

  • Builds and fosters collaborative relationships with other departments within ABET to stay informed and abreast of new initiatives, products, and services.

  • Manages the writing, research, interviews, design, and editing required for ABET communications, such as the newsletter, news releases, brochures, columns, feature articles, presentations by ABET staff and volunteers, and the annual report.

  • Builds and fosters long-term working relationships with various publics of importance, including media, members of the community, public affairs offices, and other organizations.

  • Manages the development and maintenance of the content of the ABET public website.

  • Responds to public requests for information.

  • Manages the maintenance of various contact lists for dissemination of information and marketing by ABET.

  • Supports special ad hoc projects.

  • Provides staff support to ABET task groups and initiatives of the ABET Board of Directors.

  • Other duties may be assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises one employee: the Communications Specialist. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and training; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience: Baccalaureate degree in English, Marketing, Communications, or Public Relations from an accredited four-year college or university; and at least five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in English, marketing, public relations, design, and project management. Three to five years experience in science, computing, engineering, or technology accreditation processes and activities desirable.  Experience working with volunteers and the non-profit sector a plus.

Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills essential.

Knowledge and experience in project management, customer service, and public relations.

Proficient in Microsoft Office word-processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.  Proficiency in desktop publishing and graphic design applications, including QuarkXPress and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver) essential.

Ability to work independently, to handle multiple tasks, and to translate concepts into action plans while meeting published deadlines.  Detail-oriented and entrepreneurial. Experience managing budgets a plus.
