ABET Regrets Loss of Former Executive Director David Reyes-Guerra

Baltimore, MD – ABET regrets to announce the loss of esteemed colleague and former ABET Executive Director, Dr. David Richard Reyes-Guerra, who died on Saturday, August 20, 2011, in El Salvador. Dr. Reyes-Guerra was ABET's first Executive Director and served in that capacity from 1973 to 1993.

Dr. Reyes-Guerra was a licensed professional engineer and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He began his service to ABET in 1967 as Guidance Director to the Engineer's Council for Professional Development (ECPD), ABET's predecessor organization. Then, he served as the ECPD Executive Secretary from 1971 to 1973.

In his 20 years as ABET Executive Director, Dr. Reyes-Guerra helped establish the Computing Sciences Accreditation Board (CSAB) in the mid-1980s, was principal investigator for two National Science Foundation awards, and was named an ABET Fellow in 1990. Prior to ABET, Dr. Reyes-Guerra was Executive Director at the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS).

More recently, Dr. Reyes-Guerra was the co-founder of the Pan American Academy of Engineering and had been considered a permanent and active contributor to the Pan American Union of Engineering Organizations (UPADI).

The ABET community extends our regrets and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Dr. David Reyes-Guerra.

Howard University was the first historically black college or university to have ABET-accredited programs. ABET's predecessor, the Engineers' Council for Professional Development, accredited three engineering programs there in 1937.
