March 9, 2012

Joseph L. Sussman, Ph.D.Baltimore, MD – ABET Managing Director for Accreditation and Chief Information Officer Joseph L. Sussman, Ph.D., was inducted as an ASME Fellow during the 2012 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Education Conference in Clearwater Beach, FL. The ASME Board of Governors elected Sussman as a Fellow in December 2011 and had colleagues surprise him with the honor during his presentation at the March conference.

"I'd like to congratulate Joe Sussman on this significant achievement – a true testament to professional excellence and his dedication to mechanical engineering," ABET Executive Director Michael K.J. Milligan, Ph.D., P.E., said. "Joe is a stellar example of what engineers should be – smart, articulate, focused while, at the same time, never losing sight of the tremendous impact that technical professionals have on society."

"Also, Joe is passionate about improving the quality of the educational experience for so many engineering students around the world," Milligan continued. "His contributions to ABET cannot be overstated."

Sussman joined the ABET professional staff as Managing Director for Accreditation in May 2011. Before that time, he had served ABET for 24 years in nearly every volunteer capacity, including as a mechanical engineering program evaluator, as the Chair of the Engineering Accreditation Commission, as a Representative Director from ASME on the ABET Board of Directors, and as ABET President for 2008-09. Sussman was inducted as an ABET Fellow in 2002 after having played a pivotal role in implementing the groundbreaking, outcomes-based Engineering Criteria 2000.

Sussman's professional experience includes 26 years as an engineer and business executive at Bayer AG, leading the company's quality, manufacturing, and IT efforts. More recently, he was an Industry Specialist at Deloitte Consulting, where he worked with prominent clients such as Johnson & Johnson and Lockheed Martin.

The ASME Board of Governors confers the Fellow grade of membership, its highest elected grade, to recognize a candidate’s exceptional engineering achievements and contributions to the engineering profession. To qualify as an ASME Fellow, a candidate is required to have had at least 10 years of active practice in his or her field and at least 10 years of continuous active corporate membership in ASME. The candidate is nominated by his or her peers and selected by a Fellow Review Committee.
