Issues of Accreditation in Higher Education Vols. 1-4

Viewpoints Vol. 1: Issue of Accreditation in Higher Education (PDF)
Engineering education, like so many areas in today's world, is undergoing change. Change not only in the vanishing of obsolete technologies and the addition of new technologies, but also change in the methods by which education is delivered. Education delivered anytime, and anywhere in our global economy is becoming increasingly common and is challenging ABET's goal in maintaining quality assurance in education.

Viewpoints Vol. 2: Continuing Education (PDF)
There is an increasing demand for continuing education, lifelong learning as it is often called, especially among technical workers. This demand is bolstered by both employers and employees themselves, each understanding the need to stay as up-to-date as possible in these rapidly changing technological times. Because ABET is responsible for providing quality assurance in technical higher education, it is not unreasonable to think that it may, too, have a hand in quality assurance of lifelong learning in the not-so-distant future.

Viewpoints Vol. 3: Diversity (PDF)
A diverse workforce is no longer an ideal but a requirement in an increasingly global marketplace. Many professions have made great strides toward this objective, but technical industries are faltering in the pursuit of a representative workforce. These fields show pervasive and critical deficiencies in the employment of many individuals - particularly women, members of some racial and ethnic minority groups, and persons with disabilities - whose perspectives are necessary to compete in today's business environment.

Viewpoints Vol. 4: Dual-Level Accreditation (PDF)
This white paper, the fourth in the Viewpoints series, is an attempt to inform ABET's constituencies of the dual-level issue and no less than a call to those constituencies to build consensus for action. As it should always be with federations like ABET, our constituencies drive our mission and policies, not the other way around.

Accredited Programs at HBCUs

Howard University was the first historically black college or university to have ABET-accredited programs. ABET's predecessor, the Engineers' Council for Professional Development, accredited three engineering programs there in 1937.
