At ABET:
Why did you volunteer for ABET?
To support ABET and its mission of providing educational quality assurance and to obtain a better understanding of ABET assessment processes.
In what ways do you think your participation has an impact
on your profession?
I have tried to become well-educated in assessment and evaluation processes as well as stay current in my field. Hopefully, sharing this knowledge with others has allowed me to assist other programs as they work to continuously improve their programs.
How does your volunteer work help students?
ABET can only be as strong and credible as the volunteers that support the organization. A strong and credible accreditation body helps to assure that students, who graduate from accredited programs, are being served and supported by quality engineering programs.
What are some of the qualifications that make a good ABET volunteer?
Being current in your field, having a good understanding of assessment and evaluation, having the ability to work with teams, and being willing to put forth the effort required to prepare and participate in ABET evaluation visits.
In what ways has your volunteer work for ABET been beneficial
to you, personally and/or professionally?
It has allowed me to develop a very good understanding of ABET processes and procedures. It has provided me with the opportunity to meet, and work with, engineering professionals from academe, industry, and government labs across many different engineering fields. It has provided me with the opportunity to visit colleges and universities across the U.S. and Mexico, with differing educational missions, and obtain an in-depth perspective of their programs and facilities and how they work to prepare their engineering students.
