Why did you volunteer for ABET?
In part as service to the profession (in my case, the Institute of Industrial Engineers) and in part to participate in a process whose aim is to improve engineering higher education for students, faculty, and all stakeholders.
In what ways do you think your participation has an impact
on your profession?
My participation in ABET has increased my professional network and exposed me to important elements of higher education. The Spellings Report identified three critical areas of improvement in higher education for the 21st century: access, affordability, and accountability. It is through my involvement with ABET that I have learned about the critical nature that accreditation plays in the national debate on accountability and other issues.
How does your volunteer work help students?
An education system that is focused on articulated goals, and has an integrated approach to measuring and acting on data related to those goals, creates improvements for students in the system. Courses, experiences, opportunities, and resources are all aligned toward student achievement and success.
What are some of the qualifications that make a good ABET volunteer?
I think anyone who is interested in improving engineering education, who is a team- and people-oriented person, who can work at the detail level but thinks at the system level, and who enjoys learning themselves would make an excellent volunteer.
In what ways has your volunteer work for ABET been beneficial
to you, personally and/or professionally?
I have benefited greatly through the people that I have met at all levels of volunteering. These relationships have made me a better educator, a better ABET volunteer, and a better person.
