Presented by Stu Zweben, Ph.D.

Stu Zweben is Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Administration at The Ohio State University. He previously was chair of the Computer Science and Engineering Department at Ohio State. With over 20 years of experience with computing accreditation, Stu currently chairs ABET’s Computing Accreditation Commission. He is a former president of CSAB when that organization was responsible for accrediting computer science programs, and helped write several versions of the computing accreditation criteria. He chaired the criteria committee that drafted earlier versions of the general and program criteria now in use. Stu also has consulted about computing accreditation both domestically and internationally, and has given many presentations about the subject to professional society meetings. Stu is a Fellow of ABET, a Fellow of CSAB, and a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). He also is a former president of ACM. He received the Ph.D. in computer sciences from Purdue University.

Gloria Rogers is currently the Associate Executive Director, Professional Services at ABET, Inc. She conducts assessment workshops, seminars and institutes on the topics of the assessment of student learning outcomes, change management and group facilitation. She is the co-author of, “Stepping Ahead: An Assessment Plan Development Guide” which has been distributed to over 10,000 faculty members throughout the country, and an interactive CD Rom, “Assessment Planning Flowchart” to aid programs in their assessment plan development. Rogers has organized nine national symposia on “Best Assessment Processes” that have been attended by over 1500 engineering educators from 400 institutions around the world. In addition, she has authored 28 assessment-related articles, given over 50 invited presentations at national/international conferences and facilitated workshops/seminars at over 75 campuses. In addition to her local and national involvement in assessment and educational reform, she has given invited presentations and workshops in eighteen countries around the world including a Fulbright Senior Scholar assignment in Lima, Peru.

Maryanne Weiss was appointed ABET Accreditation Director in April 2006 after 12 years with ABET as the Director, Meetings and Member Services. During her tenure with ABET, Maryanne has been involved with the Faculty Workshops for both engineering and technology faculty preparing for program evaluation under the new outcomes-based accreditation.  Most recently, Maryanne was project director for the ABET Participation Project, the initiative to optimize the expertise of ABET’s program evaluators through improved recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation.

Presented by Mary Leigh Wolfe, Ph.D.

Mary Leigh Wolfe, Professor and Assistant Department Head for Teaching, Department of Biological Systems Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia. Dr. Wolfe is the chair of the Engineering Accreditation Commission for the 2007-08 accreditation cycle. She began volunteering for ABET in 1991 as a program evaluator. She was elected as an EAC representative by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) in 2000. Dr. Wolfe was elected to the EAC executive committee in 2003, serving as a Member At-Large from 2003-05, Vice Chair for Operations in 2005-06, and Chair-Elect in 2006-07. She has served as a program evaluator for 8 visits and served as team chair for 11 visits. Dr. Wolfe conducts research and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses focused on hydrologic modeling, nonpoint source (NPS) pollution control strategies, and decision support tools for NPS pollution control and watershed management. She also conducts research related to engineering education and is currently a co-PI on an NSF Department Level Reform Grant entitled “Reformulating General Engineering and Biological Systems Engineering Programs at Virginia Tech.”

Kevin Taylor is the Interim Director of the Purdue University College of Technology at Kokomo and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology. Kevin serves as the Vice Chair of Operations of the Executive Committee of the Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC) of ABET. He is a Professional Engineer (PA), a Senior Member of IEEE, a member of SAE and ASEE, and the Co-Affiliate Director for Project Lead the Way® at Purdue.

Charles W. McGlothlin, Jr., is Assistant Professor and Program Director of the Occupational Safety and Health Program at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. He has work as an engineer, operations manager, and safety educator for over 40 years. Professor McGlothlin received BS and MS degrees in Mining Engineering from West Virginia University and his Ph.D. in Education and Human Resource Studies at Colorado State University. He is a professional member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and serves on the ASSE Education Standards Committee. He currently serves as Vice Chair-Operations of the ABET Applied Science Accreditation Commission and conducts ABET/ASAC campus visits as a team chair. In addition to serving as a ABET/ASAC program evaluator, Dr. McGlothlin has taken two applied science programs through the initial ABET accreditation process.

 Daina M. Briedis is a faculty member at Michigan State University in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Materials Science, where she also serves as her program’s coordinator of assessment and evaluation processes. She holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Iowa State University and a B.S. in Engineering Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is a member of AIChE and ASEE. Over the past 20 years, Daina has served ABET as a program evaluator for AIChE, a team chair and member of the Engineering Accreditation Commission, the first chair of the EAC Training & Materials Development Committee, and an Executive Committee member of the EAC. She was a program evaluator on one of the very first “EC2000” visits and chaired several new criteria visits since then. Briedis has been an AIChE Representative Director on the ABET Board of Directors, and has most recently been involved in the design teams for the new Program Evaluator and Train-the-Trainers training. Professor Briedis has presented extensively on the implementation of assessment and evaluation processes in engineering programs. She was recently elected a Fellow of ABET.

Lawrence G. Jones is a Senior Member of the Technical Staff in the Product Line Systems Program at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) of Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to the SEI, he served a career in the US Air Force and is the former Chair of the Computer Science Department at the Air Force Academy. He has a PhD in computer science from Vanderbilt University and Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in industrial engineering from the University of Arkansas. He is a member of the ACM and a Senior Member of the IEEE. Larry’s nearly 20 years of accreditation activities include current Chair of the Accreditation Council, immediate Past Chair of the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC), Steering Team for the Project to Advance Volunteer Excellence (PAVE, ACM Representative Director and Treasurer of the CSAB Board of Directors, Software Engineering Program Evaluator for Engineering Accreditation Commission, co-lead for development and roll out of the current CAC evaluative criteria, and frequent trainer and conference presenter on accreditation matters.

Presented by Dave Hornbeck, Ph.D.

David E. Hornbeck is Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering Technology at Southern Polytechnic State University. He holds a BS (West Virginia Tech), MS (Vanderbilt University), and PhD (Georgia Tech) in Civil Engineering. His 25 years in ABET include service as a program evaluator or team chair on approximately 26 accreditation evaluations. Hornbeck served on the TAC Executive Committee from 1998 to 2003 and chaired the Technology Accreditation Commission in 2001-2002. He served on the committee that developed performance-based criteria for TAC, and later chaired the TAC Criteria Committee for two years. Hornbeck has been a facilitator/presenter for numerous assessment workshops and has been a consultant on curriculum and program development. From 2001 to 2003, he was chair of the ABET Accreditation Council, and since 2003 has served as ABET’s Adjunct Accreditation Director for Technology. He currently chairs an advisory committee to assist Peru in establishing its own accreditation process. A member of ASCE and ASEE, he holds licensure as a professional engineer and professional surveyor.

Susan O. Schall, Ph.D., is President/Owner of SOS Consulting, LLC. Susan has over 20 years experience delivering improved performance using engineering, statistical and business process improvement methodologies, including Six Sigma, team-based problem-solving, lean manufacturing techniques, process assessment, and strategic planning. Clients include companies in the chemical, food, automotive, industrial supply, education, and printing industries.  Susan is an ABET Fellow and Senior Member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) and the American Society for Quality (ASQ). Susan represented IIE on the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) from 1997-2003 and now represents IIE on the ABET Board of Directors. As a member of the Board, Susan serves as the Board Liaison to the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC), is a member of the Partnership to Advance Volunteer Excellence (PAVE) Implementation Steering Team, and leads the Educational Delivery Strategic Task Team. Susan received a BS in Mathematics from the State University of New York, College at Fredonia, and BS, MS, and PhD in Industrial Engineering from Penn State University.
