About ABET
At ABET, our approach, the standards we set and the quality we guarantee, inspires confidence in those who aim to build a better world — one that is safer, more efficient, more comfortable and more sustainable.
Through the accreditation of academic programs, recognition of credentials and assessment of student learning, we support excellence in education worldwide. With ABET quality assurance, students, employers and the communities we serve can be confident that a program or credential meets the standards needed to prepare graduates for a global workforce.
Did you know?
ABET originally stood for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, but since 2005, we have operated exclusively under the acronym to reflect the broader range of disciplines we assure for quality. Read more about ABET’s history.
Our Three Core Areas of Quality Assurance
Programmatic Accreditation
Our voluntary, peer-review accreditation process evaluates academic programs in applied and natural sciences, computing, engineering, and engineering technology at the associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degree levels. Developed by technical professionals from ABET’s 34 member societies, our criteria focus on what learner’s experience and achieve. This respected process adds critical value to programs in technical disciplines, where quality, precision and safety are essential.
Recognition of Credentials
Our newest quality assurance service evaluates skills-based learning experiences such as micro-credentials, stackable credentials, and certificates. Conducted entirely online, this peer-review process verifies that a credential meets defined educational and workforce-aligned standards, offering quality assurance for learning outside traditional degree structures.
Assessment of Student Learning
Assessment is a systematic process for measuring student learning outcomes and driving continuous improvement. By using both direct and indirect measures, programs can identify how well students are meeting educational objectives, address gaps, and enhance teaching and learning. At ABET, assessment is a cornerstone of our accreditation criteria, ensuring programs deliver on their educational promises.
Our more than 2,200 experts from industry, academia and government volunteer their time and expertise to serve as Program and Credential Evaluators, commissioners, board members and advisors — helping maintain ABET’s reputation as a global leader in quality assurance for higher education.
ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization with ISO 9001:2015 certification.
