ABET Sustainability Microcredential

This flexible 25-hour online training explores the challenges, opportunities and innovations driving sustainability in STEM.

You’ll gain foundational knowledge and practical skills through nine modules, including: 

• Sustainability Science 

• Renewable Energy Sources and Technologies of Sustainability in STEM 

• Assessing Sustainability 

Throughout the program, you’ll engage with practical case studies that connect theory to practice—deepening your critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

By the end of this online sustainability training, you will be able to: 

• Explain how STEM practices contribute to addressing environmental, economic and social challenges aligned with the UN SDGs 

• Identify ethical and professional responsibilities in decision-making, recognizing the broader global, economic and societal impact of technical solutions 

• Evaluate sustainable designs and their effects on environmental and cultural contexts, as well as public health, safety and welfare 

• Integrate sustainability practices into organizational and professional settings, promoting a culture of responsibility and continuous improvement

• Time Commitment: Approximately 25 hours 

• Access: Immediate access upon registration; complete within 12 months and retain content access for 18 months in total

• Credential: Earn a verified ABET Sustainability Microcredential digital badge through Credly to showcase your achievement on LinkedIn and other professional platforms 

In partnership with OES, ABET developed this online sustainability microcredential to cultivate environmental responsibility and ethical awareness throughout the global STEM community. 

This initiative supports two of ABET’s Strategic Priorities (2023–2026): 

1. Broadening global engagement, and 
2. Expanding professional offerings that go beyond accreditation to prepare learners for a rapidly evolving workforce. 

While this microcredential does not impact ABET accreditation, it exemplifies ABET’s mission to promote quality and innovation in education—empowering professionals to lead with integrity, sustainability and purpose.
