ABET's International Activities

ABET has a long history of global engagement with the overarching goal of promoting and improving the quality of technical education worldwide. ABET supports improving the quality of technical education worldwide in a number of ways:

  • provides assistance in the development and continuous improvement of national accrediting systems via Memoranda of Understanding (MOU);
  • participates in the mutual recognition of accrediting systems via Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA);
  • provides general assistance and training through workshops, seminars, and conference participation;
  • recognizes the substantial equivalency of academic programs;
  • directs the accreditation of academic programs by ABET outside of the U.S.

All of these activities support ABET’s mission of providing world leadership in assuring quality and in stimulating innovation in applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology education.

Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs)

Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) - often known as the "accords" - are agreements between international organizations that accredit academic degree programs. MRAs help to determine if graduation from accredited programs in participating countries is recognized for licensure and registration, employment, or admission to graduate school. ABET participates in the Washington Accord, the Sydney Accord, the Seoul Accord and the Engineers Canada agreement.

Accreditation Outside of the U.S.

The ABET accreditation process for programs located outside of the United States (U.S.) is identical to the accreditation process for programs within the U.S. However, there are a few additional requirements associated with the request for evaluation.

Engineering Credentials Evaluation International (ECEI)

As of October 30, 2006, ABET's Engineering Credentials Evaluation International (ECEI) stopped accepting new applications for credentials evaluation. However, if ABET evaluated your credentials prior to this date, you can request a copy of your ECEI Credentials Evaluation Report.

What Does ABET Stand For?

Originally, "ABET" stood for "the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology." The organization changed its name to simply "ABET" in 2005.
