ABET could not perform its accreditation activities without its volunteers - professionals who are passionate about improving their professions through quality education. More than 2,000 dedicated technical professionals from academe, industry, and government serve in a variety of positions in the ABET accreditation process.
Volunteers evaluate program material and visit campuses, actively participate in accreditation decisions, and provide leadership on our Board of Directors. Volunteers play an essential role in assisting institutions to improve their academic programs.
Most ABET volunteers begin their service as Program Evaluators, or "PEVs." ABET accredits over 3,100 programs at over 670 institutions in 24 countries throughout the world, and we need your help! This section will help you understand what's involved in becoming an ABET Program Evaluator (PEV).
The Role of the Program Evaluator
Academic programs are evaluated against a set of specific criteria, developed by the applied science, computing, engineering, and engineering technology professions. These criteria outline the requirements for student support, quality and appropriateness of faculty and facilities, relevance of curriculum, continuous quality improvement processes, and other key program areas. It is the program evaluator’s job to determine if these criteria are met.

Review the Self-Study Report
The work of a program evaluator begins in late summer with a review of the self-study report, which is prepared by the program seeking accreditation. The self-study report contains information about the institution, as well as detailed information that illustrate how the academic program meets the evaluation criteria. The program evaluator reviews this information and, if necessary, communicates with the program directly to resolve ambiguities or to answer questions raised by the report.

During the fall, the program evaluator travels to the campus with one or more additional program evaluators and an evaluation team leader. The program evaluator spends approximately two and a half days investigating his or her assigned program with the help of the program’s chair and faculty.
On-site visit activities include:
- verifying the information provided in the self-study report
- observing classes;
- interviewing students, faculty members, administrators, and staff;
- visiting classrooms, labs, and other key facilities; and
- reviewing textbooks, course syllabi, student work and assessment materials.
Based on a review of the self-study report and observations made on campus, the program evaluators prepare a draft report describing how well the program met ABET criteria. This draft statement is provided to the institution at the conclusion of the campus visit.

After the On-Site Visit
After returning from the campus visit, the program evaluator submits a travel expense report. Travel expenses for the on-site visit are reimbursed by ABET. The program evaluator also completes a survey evaluating the performance of his or her team members. The program evaluator may also respond to additional questions from the Team Chair who is finalizing the team’s report.
